Using AI to study without quietly cheating yourself
We make an AI study app, so treat what follows with appropriate suspicion. But it would be dishonest to sell you a tool without being straight about the way it can be used badly — and the bad way is genuinely tempting, because it feels efficient.
The two modes
Mode one: you're stuck on a problem, you ask for the answer, you copy it down, you move on. Homework complete in twenty minutes. You have learned nothing, and worse, you now believe you understand a topic you cannot do.
Mode two: you're stuck, you ask why your approach isn't working, you get an explanation, you close it and try the next one unaided. Slower. That one sticks.
Same tool, same session length. Completely different outcome in an exam hall where the tool isn't available.
The question worth asking before every prompt: am I trying to finish this, or trying to be able to do the next one?
Prompts that make you sharper
- "I got X, the answer is Y. Where did I go wrong?" — makes the AI diagnose your reasoning rather than replace it.
- "Explain this like I'm in class 9, then ask me a question to check I got it." — turns an explanation into a test.
- "Give me three problems on this, hardest last. Don't show solutions yet." — practice, not answers.
- "What's the most common mistake students make here?" — surprisingly high-yield before an exam.
- "Quiz me on this chapter, one question at a time, and don't tell me if I'm right until the end."
Prompts that feel productive and aren't
- "Do question 4 for me."
- "Summarise this chapter" — then reading the summary once and calling it revision.
- "Write my essay on…"
- Asking for an explanation, nodding along, and never attempting a problem unaided.
The last one is the sneaky one. It feels like studying. It has all the surface features of studying. It builds recognition and no recall — the same trap as re-reading your notes, just with better production values.
AI is confidently wrong sometimes
This matters more in some subjects than others. For explaining a concept, current models are genuinely good. For long multi-step arithmetic, obscure syllabus specifics, or anything where your board's definition differs from the general one, they can produce something fluent, well-formatted and wrong.
Two habits protect you. First, check anything you'll be graded on against your textbook. Second, when an answer surprises you, ask it to show its working — errors usually become visible a step or two in.
The rule that survives contact with reality
Use AI to get unstuck, never to skip the getting-stuck. The struggle before the explanation is not wasted time — it is the part that makes the explanation stick. If you ask before you have genuinely tried, you get a fluent answer and no memory of it.
Practically: give any problem five real minutes of your own effort first. If you're still stuck after five minutes, ask — that's what the tool is for, and grinding for an hour on something you fundamentally haven't been taught is not noble, it's just slow.
